The thing about Community Futures Howe Sound that people don’t always know is that it’s a very personal, local service.
You’re getting expert business advice from someone highly experienced, friendly, and local – all for free. It’s like meeting a business advisor down at the brewery and picking their brains about your business plans. And when you hear about Executive Director Kieran Hale’s business background, you might see why that metaphorical meeting isn’t so far-fetched.
So we interviewed Kieran to hear about his background, his favourite parts of the job, the advice he gives the most often, and more.
What is your main role at Community Futures Howe Sound?
As the Executive Director, my role is to support local entrepreneurs by connecting them with resources, funding, and expertise to help their businesses thrive. I’m here to guide businesses through early-stage challenges, offer solutions tailored to their needs, and champion economic growth in our community.
What was your business background before you started working here?
Before joining Community Futures Howe Sound, I was running a brewery in Vancouver. My background is as a Chartered Accountant and Consultant in London, but I have done a whole range of things from Ski Instructor to owning my own business. I’ve always been drawn to helping small businesses find their footing and succeed, whether that’s been through mentorship, financial planning, or developing efficient systems to make their work easier.
What's the one piece of advice you find yourself giving businesses time and time again?
“Start with the numbers.” Whether it’s creating a realistic budget, planning cash flow, or understanding profitability, I often remind businesses to build their decisions on solid financial foundations. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming—there are great tools and support available—but clarity around your finances is essential for long-term success.
What is your favourite part of the job?
The people! I love hearing about someone’s vision for their business and being able to provide the tools or connections to help bring it to life. It’s incredibly rewarding to see the ripple effects of a thriving business in our community—jobs created, partnerships formed, and success stories shared.
What do clients need to know or do before setting up a meeting with you?
Come as you are! There’s no need for a polished business plan or perfect pitch—just be ready to share where you’re at and what you’re working on. If you’ve thought about specific goals or challenges you’d like help with, even better. We’ll work together to figure out the next steps.
What do you do when you don't have all the answers for a client?
I’m honest about it. No one has all the answers, but I make it my priority to connect people with the right resources or experts who do. Whether it’s linking them to industry professionals, funding opportunities, or other organizations, I like to give at least a next step.
Is there a local business you'd particularly love to work with?
I’m always excited to work with businesses that align with the spirit of our community—outdoor adventure, sustainability, and innovation are big themes here in the Sea to Sky. If I had to pick, I’d love to work with a business that’s exploring sustainable tourism or outdoor gear manufacturing—it’s such a natural fit for our region.
