3 SEO improvements you can make to your website today

We specialize in business advice, from marketing to finance.

Small business owners are well aware that search engine optimization (SEO) is vital for digital marketing.

After all, organic search drives over 1,000% more traffic than organic social media.

But when your specialties lie in the products and services you’re offering, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the many – many – pieces of digital marketing jargon and expert advice floating around online.

But if you’re planning to work on your website in the New Year and would like to make some achievable improvements, here are three SEO changes you can realistically make to help your website get found by customers online.

  1. Add captions to your images

There’s a good chance you already have images on your website. That’s why it should be an easy and quick job for you to go through and add captions to each one. The trick here is to incorporate keywords into those captions.

For example, since one of the main services we offer is ‘free business advice’, we might caption an image of two people speaking with ‘Our free business advice can help give you the knowledge you need to launch or grow your start-up.’

Simply note down your main services or products, then work those terms into your captions in a natural way.

Extra for experts: Copy and paste that caption into the ‘alt text’ on the back end of your website. This tells Google what’s in the image, and can add extra SEO juice to your website.

  1. Update your content regularly

One of the most common pieces of advice in SEO is to write blogs (hello!). While this is great advice and definitely something you should do if you can, many business owners are stretched far too thin to plan, write, and publish blogs with any regularity.

The easier, quicker option is to update your existing content regularly. While it might not be quite as effective as creating a whole new blog, it is certainly better than nothing. It signals to Google and other search engines that you’re keeping an eye on your website content and making regular efforts to keep it fresh and up to date.

You could add new paragraphs, update your products and services, switch out your images, or make other small changes. It all helps!

  1. Add keywords to your headlines

If you’re not sure what your keywords are, just think about what people might type in when they’re looking for your products or services.

For example, we talk about ‘free business advice’ and ‘business loans’ a lot, because those are our two key services – and our main keywords.

Once you have a few keywords in mind, go through your website and see if you can add them to the headings on your pages.

For example, perhaps you currently have a headline like ‘How we got started’. You could change that to ‘How our business advice service got started’. It’s a simple switch that won’t change the user experience, but it will signal to Google that your content is a great source of information for those keywords.

Extra for experts: Go through all the wording on your website and do the same thing. Always make sure to only put keywords where they make sense in the sentence, and don’t overuse them to the point of making it a poor reading experience for your visitors.
